Political crisis and economic collapse have exacerbated Zaire's long-standing problems of corruption and human rights abuses. Violence and crime of all kinds, including extortion, robbery, rape and murder, are on the increase. Many murders are attributed to the security forces and politically linked death squads, as are the occasional "disappearances." Ethnic violence, suppressed after 1965, has resurfaced, particularly in the south.
